Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership
The Sustainable CAP is a five-year program that runs until March 31, 2028. This is a 3.5 billion dollar funding program that is cost-shared between provincial/territorial and federal governments in Canada and is intended to "strengthen the competitiveness, innovation and resiliency of the agriculture, agri-food, and agri-based products sector." The first billion of funding is contributed by the federal government. The other 2.5 billion is comprised of cost-shared programs and activities.
The program focuses on the five key priorities for Canadian agriculture laid out in the Guelph Statement. These include:
- Building the agriculture sector's capacity, growth and competitiveness,
- Navigating climate change and environment challenges,
- A continuing commitment to science, research and innovation,
- Further developing markets and trade, and
- Establishing resiliency and growing public trust.
Federally Funded Programs
Federally funded programs included in the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership support growth in the agricultural sector. These include the AgriMarketing Program, the AgriCompetitiveness Program, the AgriInnovate Program, the AgriScience Program, AgriDiversity Program, and the Agri Assurance Program.
AgriMarketing will increase and diversify exports to international markets and will use those increased exports to grow the Canadian economy.
AgriCompetitiveness will support mental health programs plus national consumer education on the value of agriculture, will promote agricultural careers and increasing skills, knowledge and best agricultural practices, and will help further the capacity of the agricultural industry.
AgriInnovate lends money for commercialization that is incentive based for the consumer, or for the adoption or demonstration of technology geared to increasing sustainability and competitiveness.
AgriScience Program - clusters support partnerships and single, less comprehensive projects that address priority issues and national themes.
AgriScience Program - projects supports pre-commercial science activities and research.
AgriDiversity assists Indigenous Peoples and underrepresented groups within the agriculture industry.
AgriAssurance Program - National Industry Association will help the agricultural sector develop and adopt assurance systems to manage risk, enhance resiliency, and address market considerations
AgriAssurance Program - Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises will increase markets between free trade nations and domestic markets for Indigenous Peoples.
Cost-Shared Programs
The Resilient Agriculture Landscape Program is designed to increase the on-farm adoption of programs to address climate change. This program is administered by the provinces so that local conditions are represented well. This program compliments the Agricultural Climate Solution On-Farm Climate Action Fund, which aims to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Business Risk Management Programs
The Business Risk Management Programs are designed to help operators manage significant risk that threaten viability and are more than can be managed alone. The costs of these programs are shared by provincial and federal governments.
AgriStability. If you have experienced a large decline, this program may work for you.
AgriInsurance. This insurance is cost-shared and protects you against natural hazards and asset losses.
AgriInvest. This program invests in you when the market has declined.
AgriRecovery. This can help you recover in the event of a natural disaster.
All of these programs have different intake dates. Many are open for applications now.
